Rebuilding the bugger
June 2005

Here's an update on how my bike rebuild is going. The plan was (and still is) to get it track-ready for the trackday with the ever helpful Dave Woods.

So, what's been done so far:
The frame has been chopped. This along with the swingarm have been painted with cable mounting points set inside the frame. This is to hide the cable ties and to make the frame look as clean as possible.

The wheels are replaced by Carbon and Magnesium jobbies (courtesy of Nattyboy Independent Traders). They come supplied with gold centres but these have been repainted to match the frame (a Hardly Ableson Medtallic Candy Red colour). These were due back today but unfortunately need repainting due to an accidental scratch.

The front forks have been replaced by Ohlins 53mm Superbike kit with radial calipers and new front disks. It came with new top and bottom yokes - the top has been polished and the magnesium bottom has been painted. As is tradition with magnesium parts, it comes in a s hite brown colour which I originally thought was actual magnesium colour but is just a primer of some kind (I stand to be corrected of course).

The clutch and brake master cylinders have been replaced by the brembo radial versions. These are all attached to a pair of Cyclecat clip-ons with risers. I had problems mounting the mirrors so have sourced some mirror clamps from the US which work with the Brembo items. These will be garnished with a pair of Rizoma reservoirs.

A Ducati Performance slipper has (or will be) fitted with a DP red pressure plate topped off with a Rizoma clutch cover. A new slave cylinder is hiding in there aswell.

The tank, headlight, seat unit and various other carbon bits are being painted by Extreme Racepaint. The headlight has been replaced by a twin projector style (KTM Duke style) and the seat unit is an MV Agusta single seat unit, custom fitted onto the Monster seat pan and complete with integrated indicators.

The rear shock has been replaced by a Swedish thingymibob but still working out where to put the remote reservoirs. The rearsets have also been replaced by Cyclecat versions. The gearing has also been changed with a larger rear sprocket.

The exhausts has been replaced with a full system - Spareshack headers with the Termi hi-level twin pipes (one either side). Depending on how the sit, the pipework may need to be cut back a bit - the Termis are quite a bit longer than the old Sils I had. New air filter along with the Power Commander III are also lurking somewhere.

Other stuff fitted will be: top mounted steering damper, Translogic digital dash (still deciding which one), carbon fenders, mirrors along with some crash protectors. The rear fender was a QB/Spareshack 2 piece version but it covered up the swingarm too much so that is still undecided.

Polishers have also been hard at work: the full system, exhaust ends, sidestand, top yoke and rear sprocket cover.

The seat will be cut to fit the seat unit better and will then be covered in red/black Alcantara and/or leather.
And then I'll find something else to change. This whole project has taken much longer than expected due to a few minor hiccups but we now seem to moving forward. Dave Wood along with Jane have put up with my amazing ability to agree something only to change my mind within hours and would recommend him to anyone wanting something a bit bespoke, sir. Nothing seems to be a problem and with a bit of luck, I be riding the thing within a week. Can't wait.
